To the mechanical transmission and differential apply the following brands of oils: API GL 4, SAE 80, G50 and SAE 75W-90. Periodic replacement and check of level of oil is not provided.

In certain cases (for example, at leaks) there is a need of check of level of oil and its dolivka. For this purpose execute the following operations:

– install the car on a viewing ditch or the elevator;

– turn off a stopper of an oil-filling opening of the transmission;

– check oil level through an oil-filling opening. It has to be not lower than 6 mm of the lower edge of an opening;

– add oil (if necessary);

– wrap a stopper.

In the automatic transmission of model 096 Dexron II ATF liquid is used. On the models equipped with such transmission apply G50 and SAE 75W-90 gearbox oils to differential lubricant. Periodic replacement of liquid is not provided in the transmission. However it is necessary to check its level. For this purpose put the car on a horizontal surface. Level decides on the help of the index (fig. 1.55) in the sequence similar to determination of level of oil in the engine (see subsection. "Engine oil").

PREVENTION If liquid in the transmission has black color and a smell of burning, then repair of a box is necessary. In this case it is necessary to address to the service center Volkswagen immediately.

At the automatic transmission of model 01M of cars since 1995 of release the level of liquid can be checked only in the service center Volkswagen by means of the diagnostic equipment. It differs in lack of the index. Apply VW ATF G 052 162 A1 liquid to the transmission 01M and differential.
