Repair Volkswagen Passat B3-B4/Passat B3-B4>> System of ignition>> Check of system of ignition>> Check of system of ignition of KE-Motronic
The control unit has memory of damages which works at the included ignition. Information on damages is stored in constant memory which can be cleared after elimination of defects. Other damages remain in additional memory which saves information even after switching off of ignition, but is automatically nullified at turning on of the engine.
Data read-out about damages can be made by means of a LED tester.

Digifant control unit
Carry out check of the Digifant control unit in the following order:

Fig. 6.25. A LED tester for check of system of ignition KE-Motronic: And — the black socket; In – the brown or white socket;
With – the blue socket; D – test socket; 1 – test wires

– prepare a LED tester (fig. 6.25) ;
– check integrity of safety locks 15 and 18. Switch off the conditioner and check reliability of fastening of the tire of grounding of a head of the block of cylinders;
– start the engine, and make a trial trip of at least 5 min., at the same time turns of the engine have to be not less than 3000 min.-1. During a trip, several times for a short time press against the stop an accelerator pedal;
– warm up the engine up to the normal working temperature and let's the engine work on idling turns. Do not increase engine turns during the subsequent tests;
– if the engine is not started by a starter during 6 with, leave ignition included;
– remove finishing of the lever of gear shifting from the central console. Sockets are placed ahead of the gear shifting lever, under the console;
– connect a tester to contacts of the test socket, except for contact of D. Include ignition and attach wires to contact of D no more than on 4 with;
– count the number of flashes of a LED tester. Flashes begin a luminescence duration – 2,5 with and the pause proceeding 2,5 with then impulses follow through 0,5 pages. Count the number of flashes of each group of signals and as a result get a number with four figures. If damage is not written down in memory, the code 4444 will be given (four groups on four impulses of flash).

Ignition coil
Carry out check of the coil of ignition in the following order:
– disconnect electric wires and uncover the ignition coil;

Fig. 6.17. Check of resistance of a secondary winding of the coil of ignition: 1 – ignition coil; 2 – the plug of ignition 1 (–); 3 – plug 4 (HT); 4 – plug 15 (+)

– connect a tester between plugs 1 (–) and 15 (+) (see fig. 6.17 ) and check resistance of primary winding of the coil of ignition;
– connect a tester between plugs 4 (HT) and 15 (+) and check resistance of a secondary winding of the coil of ignition.

Power control unit
Carry out check of the power control unit in the following order:

Fig. 6.26. Voltage measurement on contacts of 1 and 3 power control units

Fig. 6.27. Arrangement of the power control unit of ignition: 1 – plug 4; 2 – central wire; 3 – ignition coil; 4 – electric socket; 5 – power control unit

– squeeze the fixing uvulas and disconnect from the socket of the power control unit (fig. 6.26) behind the ignition coil the electric plug 4 (fig. 6.27) ;
– include ignition and connect the digital universal measuring device (in the voltage measurement mode) between two external contacts (1 and 3) on the socket. The device has to show accumulator tension;
– connect a LED tester between contacts 2 and 3 on the socket;
– turn the engine a starter, at the same time the light-emitting diode has to blink. Otherwise, check Hall's sensor;
– switch off ignition and connect the socket;
– disconnect the electric socket from Hall's sensor on the distributor;
– connect the digital universal measuring device (in the voltage measurement mode) between plugs 1 (–) and 15 (+) on the ignition coil (see fig. 6.17 ) and include ignition;
– using an additional wire, connect the central contact of the electric socket of the sensor of Hall with "weight". At the same time tension has to increase to 2 V, then for 1–2 with to decrease to zero;
– if tension does not decrease, establish a new power output block or the block at board, and also check a condition of the coil of ignition.

Hall's sensor
Carry out check of the sensor of Hall in the following order:

       PREVENTION
Check is necessary only in the absence of sparking.

– squeeze the fixing uvulas and disconnect the electric socket from a power output block on the ignition coil;
– connect a LED tester to contacts 2 and 3 on the socket;
– turn the engine a starter, at the same time the light-emitting diode has to blink that indicates serviceability of the sensor of Hall;
– if the light-emitting diode does not blink, disconnect the electric socket from Hall's sensor on the distributor, then connect the voltmeter to two external contacts on the socket. At the included ignition the device has to show at least 9 V;
– connect the electric socket and remove from it a rubber cover, for access to contacts of the socket;
– connect a LED tester between the central contact on the socket and the positive plug (+) the accumulator;
– turn the engine a starter, at the same time the light-emitting diode has to blink that indicates serviceability of the sensor of Hall. If the luminescence is absent, Hall's sensor or the FEI control unit are faulty.

Dumping of information from constant memory of damages
Carry out check of the Digifant control unit in the following order:
at the switched-off ignition, disconnect a special wire for tests (see fig. 6.25 );
connect a fork of D and a nest;
include ignition on 4 with and check that the light-emitting diode shines;
repeat control, attaching approximately on 4 about a fork and a nest. At the same time the code 4444 indicating absence of damage and dumping of contents of memory has to be highlighted.

Interpretation of codes
